Dulwich Picture Gallery is known principally for its paintings. Little attention has been paid to the furniture and the imminent publication of a concise book, generously funded by the Dulwich Decorative & Fine Arts Society (DDFAS), seeks to redress this imbalance. We designed the 40 page book which is due out at the end of September.
We designed this 216 page book on the Ashcan Artists for Merrell/Detroit Institute of Art. The Ashcan school of artists are associated with depictions of working-class life in early twentieth-century New York. However they also embraced the world of play enjoyed by all levels of society. Spirited scenes of diverse leisure activities in cafés, bars and parks, at the theatre, on the beach, at sporting events and in the countryside provide a refreshing look at this important artistic movement.
The Revival’s unique combination of pre-1966 motor racing, famous drivers and riders, classic vehicles, air displays, period fashions, music, food and a uniquely nostalgic atmosphere are all celebrated in Goodwood Revival, The First Ten Years. We designed the book for Merrell Publishers who also produced a limited edition bound in cloth and leather available from the
Goodwood online shop.
We designed the 224 pages of ‘The Royal Palaces of London’ for Merrell. It is the first major survey to bring together the stories of London’s magnificent royal palaces, from Eltham and Greenwich in the east, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Whitehall and Westminster in the centre to Hampton Court and Kew to the west.‘The Royal Palaces of London’ is written by David Souden, Lucy Worsley and Brett Dolman and features a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales. Published in association with Historic Royal Palaces.
We designed the blocked clothbound cover for this book of historical whodunits from the Folio Society. Ian Pindar drew upon the wisdom of many of the leading experts to dispel myth and propaganda, weigh the evidence and reveal the most likely solutions to 20 of the past's most intractable mysteries.
A prolific and progressive painter known for his dynamic representations of American life, George Wesley Bellows (1882– 1925) was a leading member of the Ashcan school of artists. The book, which we designed, includes Bellows’s signature paintings of urban life, a selection of portraits, his lesser-known landscapes and his brilliant portrayals of prizefighters and other athletes in action.
The posters reproduced in this book we designed are from the collection of Richard Frick and featured in the talk he gave to the Typographic Circle in 2003. Richard (a designer and typographer) is an active member of the Swiss communist party and has been a frequent visitor to Cuba. Political, educational and cultural posters were crucial to the Cuban revolution. Castro explained: ‘Since the first day of January our revolutionary method, our revolutionary way, against the tyranny has been to mothball our weapons and the tanks which we took off the enemy, to put aside our rifles and to use our one and only great weapon, the only legitimate weapon which is public opinion.’
